The wrecked container ship Rena has delivered a nice gift in the form of a luxury Mercedes Benz for the Child Cancer Foundation (CCF).
Buy and sell website trademe is auctioning the 2003 E200 Kompressor over two-weeks with proceeds going to the CCF's Tauranga branch.
"We are so thankful for the enthusiasm and willingness of local businesses who want the car to go to a good cause," CCF fundraising and business development manager, Delwynne Hahunga said.
So far, bidders have been quite taken by the vehicle that was bound for Sri Lanka before the Rena struck a reef off the Bay of Plenty.
"This has obviously got a lot of coverage and it's gone quite viral. It's great," Hahunga said.
The vehicle required some restoration as has been valued at $15,000, but as of Friday bids have been streaming in. The top bid sits at $11,650.
"This is an awesome start," Hahunga said. "I'm feeling very positive about this."
The Mercedes is on view at Safeway Auto Auctions on Totara Street, Mount Maunganui, which has provided a location for the car to be viewed throughout the auction.
