A 20-year-old man had to be winched to safety from a Perth lake after taking a shortcut home from a music festival and ending up trapped in neck-deep mud overnight.

Rescue services were called after a passerby noticed Shane Parker trapped in swamp land about 60m from the edge of Lake Joondalup about 6.30am local time yesterday, the West Australian reports.

A helicopter was used to pull Parker from the mud after rescuers decided wading into the lake would be too dangerous.

The young man, who had been at the Supafest concert, was taken to hospital for a check-up and treatment for exposure.

After the ordeal Parker was asked what he thought of his new nickname "mud man".

"Mud man, it's gonna stick," he told the Nine Network.

Parker was later arrested on an unrelated assault charge.
