If you're a single guy who's permanently on the go, thanks to work and a hectic social life, then staying connected is an essential part of everyday life.

With most of us enjoying the odd bit of social networking while we're out and about, as well as dipping into email and needing to browse the web, getting the right kit in your mobile tech arsenal is vital.

It doesn't matter what the platform, there are now gadgets and gizmos that'll keep you in touch with your mates, no matter where you are. Better still, it's now possible to boost the kit that you buy with an endless array of software apps that'll allow you to do everything from post pics of yourself doing crazy things in the pub through to playing virtual sport on the train.

Stick Cricket
The most popular cricket game in the world, Stick Cricket brings real players onto your iPhone or iPod touch. A game with only two buttons but it's simple and highly addictive, even if you don't like cricket! Go on, choose your team and face the world's best bowlers but watch out for the head-cracking bouncers!

Viewranger
Apps aren't always about sitting on your backside playing games. Viewranger gets you up and at 'em featuring a stack of navigational tools so you can be at one with nature without ever getting lost! Incredible map details, turn by turn treks and trails plus your speed, distance and altitude stats all scrutinised in minute detail. There are also different versions depending on available budget and energy levels.

Jamie's 20 minute meals
A guy's gotta eat, right? Well, now you can prepare any one of Jamie Oliver's 60 meals while you're on the go thanks to this sumptuous app. Most of the recipes can be knocked up in around 20 minutes. There are video tutorials plus complete shopping lists of the necessary ingredients so you can pick up everything you need on the way home from work. Jamie might not be everyone's cup of tea but his cooking is undeniably top notch.

Facebook Friendly
If you're enjoying the extra screen acreage that comes with an Apple iPad then Friendly is a must-have app that delivers everything Facebook does, only to much better effect. Dip in and keep tabs on your mates by checking status updates in an instant. There are three core window options include Live Feed, Events and Places, but you can also tweak your own settings, watch videos within the news feed area and also send and receive instant messages.

Free App Hero
Why waste time looking for great free games when this app can do it for you. If you regularly download games to your iOS device then this picks through the best freebies and recommends only the good stuff. There's no ads, no fluff and no-nonsense. It's even got an editorial team on-board to ensure premium grade quality control.

Flipboard
This is great fun. Flipboard is an app, also for the iPad, that acts as a personalised social magazine. It allows you to flip through the things your mates are sharing with you on Facebook and Twitter, all within the confines of a deliciously laid out digital magazine style format. You can recommend, comment on or share anything inside the panels that you've added. If they don't already have Flipboard, your mates will want it instantly!

Scrabble
Go solo or, ideally, connect with your mates and have a local network battle of words via the all-time classic game of Scrabble. There's shake 'n' shuffle and drag 'n' drop functionality and it can be hooked up to your iTunes library allowing you to rock while you rack up the triple word scores. There's even a dictionary update in the latest edition for the real wordsmiths among you.

Traffic Rush
If you're a wannabe car owner then try giving Traffic Rush a go. This has become one of the best games on the iPhone and players find it immensely difficult to put down. You're stuck in a big city, traffic is rising and you're in charge of traffic flow. If only it could be like this in real life.
